Coffee can’t replace a permanent home or provide closure after trauma – but it can help life to feel normal again. It can also provide a small income where otherwise there would be nothing.
Yida refugee camp was supposed to be closed by now, but it’s still home to 60,000 refugees who have been based there since 2011 (UN figures). Although the UN wish to relocate the camp, refugees are unwilling to move to the new location out of fear that they will be even more vulnerable there.
Amid this tragedy, widow Afaf Ahmed decided to start serving coffee in the traditional Sudanese method, roasting the beans fresh by hand and adding spices. See her explain why in this video from AJ+.
