VIDEO: Why Economic Sustainability Needs More Than Better Prices

At the end of Ben and Kirsty Carlson’s two-year project to support Burundian coffee farmers, they realised they had only benefited the roasters.

Fortunately, they did not give up. Instead, they invested in Burundi by opening a washing mill, and began the long task of improving cup profiles, creating direct trade relationships, and making coffee production sustainable in one of the world’s poorest countries (IMF, World Bank).

They discovered first-hand the difficulties in making coffee production sustainable. Watch Ben explain how their story, and how they managed to make a difference.
