VIDEO: What Do Different Coffee Varietals Look Like?

How does your coffee taste? It depends on the varietal (among other factors). And there are countless different varietals: Caturra, Catuai, Catimor, Bourbon, Yirgacheffe, Pacas, Pacamara, Geisha, Maragogype, Maracaturra

So what do they look like? Find out in today’s video guide!

Cherries, Leaves, & Green Beans

We scoured the internet to find this farm-based video from Jennifer of Behind the Beans in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. She starts by showing us Robusta, Excelsa, Red Caturra, Yellow Caturra, and Maragogype coffee cherries and leaves. Robusta and Excelsa are both coffee species, while Caturra and Maragogype are varietals of the Arabica species.

Next Jennifer splits open the cherries to reveal the seeds or “beans”, and even does a quick taste test. She also explains how the Robusta and Red Caturra both show signs of borer beetle damage, while one of the Yellow Caturra cherries is a peaberry – a cherry with one large bean instead of two.

Roasted Beans

Next Tyler Hauptman takes a brief look at roasted coffee beans. His statement that espresso beans should be roasted darker could be considered contentious, but he gives us a look at Pacamara and Bourbon – and discusses the flavour profiles.
