Yogyakarta might not be one of the biggest cities in Indonesia, but it is one of the most famous – and, if you ask me, that’s rightly so. Our ancient temples, beautiful palaces, and picture-perfect beaches attract tourists from all over the world. And if you’re going to spend all day exploring this Javanese city, well, you’re going to need some good Java to see you through it.
Fortunately, Yokyakarta’s specialty coffee scene is growing strong. So here are my suggestions for five specialty coffee shops worth visiting, along with nearby sights.

In Yogyakarta.
Why These Five?
It would be impossible to pick the “best” specialty cafés in Yogyakarta. Not only are new cafés opening all the time here, but deciding what makes one café better than another is simply too subjective. Instead, I’ve picked my five personal favourites. All are unique and have a strong presence on the Yogyakarta specialty coffee scene. So, in no particular order, let’s begin!
1. No. 27
From the outside, this café seems like a tiny little coffee spot – you may even be tempted to skip it. But walk inside and you’ll see that it’s surprisingly spacious. Red brick walls adds a trendy aesthetic to a delightful coffee shop.
As for the coffee itself, this is a good spot for trying Indonesian beans. They serve coffee from all over the country, including ones from local Yogyakarta roasters. And occasionally, they also have offerings from international roasters.

Nearby Sights | It’s a 20-minute walk to Plaza Ambarrukmo or, if shopping’s more your thing, a short taxi journey to Hartono Mall |
No 27 Cafe looks small, but appearances are deceiving.
2. NOX Coffee
When you walk into this modern coffee shop, you’ll be hit by its elegance – and then you’ll notice the Kees van der Westen espresso machine and cold drip tower. The coffee is every bit as good as the equipment promises. And what’s more, NOX Coffee offers plenty of desserts. Get ready to indulge yourself.

3. Epic Coffee
This café-cum-furniture shop is a great place to lose an hour or two. Whether you choose to sit in the spacious indoor café space or the outside garden, there’s plenty of room – and plenty of good food to nibble on.
What’s more, with coffee this good, it’s worth ordering more than one drink here. Epic Coffee roasts on-site, and occasionally you’ll find rare and exotic varietals here, such as Geisha. The water is filtered, the equipment first-rate, and they even offer cupping sessions. What’s not to like?
Where | Jalan Palagan Tentara Pelajar 29 |

4. Lantai Bumi
This highly Instagrammable café is a popular spot among students, who come to hang out, study, or practice photography. It’s not just students who should come here, though. The patio has lots of greenery, making it a cool escape on a hot day, while the coffee isn’t to be missed.

5. Ruang Seduh
This stylish coffee shop is as bright and clean as a great specialty coffee, thanks to its all-white décor. It has plenty of seating, as well as two brew bars.
Speaking of brewing, Ruan Seduh only offers one manual brew method – but it’s one you’ll want to try. The Walkure is a German invention with a unique filtration system that creates great clarity. What’s more, if you’re curious about it, the baristas will let you try brewing your coffee yourself.
Where | Jalan Tirtodipuran no 46 |
Espresso Machine | Nuova Simonelli Appia II |
Grinder | Mazzer for espressos, EK43 for manual brews |
Manual Brewing Devices | Walkure pour over |

Must-Try Drink | The Walkure pour over |
Food & Other Drinks | Cookies, tea, and hot chocolate |
Nearby Sights | Situated on the outskirts of the city, this is the perfect place for a coffee before you go for a day trip to Parangtritis beach |
