Crop Diversification: A VIDEO Guide to Growing Avocadoes

Is there anything more perfect than a ripe avocado? Not only is it absolutely delicious, but the plants can be a boon for coffee farmers – who can diversify their income by selling the fruit while also taking advantage of its nitrogen-fixing qualities.

So how do you farm avocados? Well, it turns out it’s not quite a case of sticking it in soil and adding some water. Luckily we’ve got some video guides to take us through it. But first, let’s have a look at the conditions you’ll need.

Conditions for Growing Avocados

Avocados are tropical, but fortunately also highly adaptable. They prefer moderately warm and moderately humid temperatures. Mexican varieties suffer the cold the best, but even they struggle if it reaches freezing.

When you eventually plant them, they like loose soil that’s not too damp. Despite that, they need frequent watering.

How to Grow Avocados

Mitchell, aka Mr. Eastcoastman, takes us through the first steps. And all you need is a plastic cup, three toothpicks, and a seed – who’d’ve thought it could be so easy?

The next question I’m sure you’re waiting for an answer to is: how do you know when to pot them?

MyInspiredCreation explains that it’s when your roots have stopped growing, but the plant is still healthy. However, don’t stress about getting this one wrong – there’s an overlapping period where your avocado plant will grow equally well in both containers.

And that’s it – you’ve got your very own avocado plant. It couldn’t be more simple.
