Japan’s specialty scene has been blooming (pardon the pun) just lately, and Re:verb, Tokyo promises to be no exception. Targeted towards entrepreneurs and professionals aiming to expand their role in the coffee industry, the one-day event is taking a look at a wide range of issues and opportunities. From business-orientated talks on training and design to producer-centric sessions on going from commodity to specialty farming, it’s set up to be a stimulating series of discussions.
The Speakers
Speakers include Arthur Karuletwa, Director of Traceability for Starbucks; Danielle Harris, designer and brand strategist; Klaus Thomsen of The Coffee Collective; Matt Graylee of Flight Coffee; and Trish Rothgeb of the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) and Wrecking Ball Coffee.
The Programme:
- You Have Great Coffee—Now What? Danielle Harris
Danielle Harris comes prepared to discuss design with audience members – because we all know that without marketing and branding, great coffee just doesn’t sell like it’s great coffee.
- Demystifying the Flavor Wheel Trish Rothgeb
Known for – among many other things – purportedly creating the term “third wave“, Trish Rothgeb has experience in nearly every area of the industry. Director of Programs: Q and Educational Services at CQI, now she’s bringing her cupping experience to discuss the (relatively) new flavour wheel.
- Transitions to Specialty Coffee Farming Matt Graylee
Matt Graylee is preparing to discuss the de-commoditisation of specialty coffee, and how to improve the supply chain, with a focus on helping small businesses. He’s founded or co-founded at least five companies, and works on experimental farming and processing techniques with Raw Materials.
- Different Spaces, Different Paces Klaus Thomsen
Previous World Barista Champion and Head of Barista Training (as well as PR Manager) at Coffee Collective, Klaus Thomsen knows all about being a barista. He’s going to lead a discussion on barista training and design.
The Event Details
The event will be held during SCAJ Show at Tokyo Big Sight on September 27th. Register to attend here.
