Washington DC: The Barista Body Calibration Workshop During SCA Prelims

As has been previously discussed on Sprudge, being a barista is draining physically and mentally. It’s hard on your body. Your wrist, your back, your thumb, your knees, your feet: if you have any of these and you are a barista, they probably ache due to occupational stresses.

For those attending the SCA Preliminary round this weekend in Washington, D.C., there’s the Barista Body Calibration, a two-hour workshop to help teach baristas how to recover from and prevent injury due to repetitive movement.

Put together by DMV Coffee—“a grassroots organization that serves the coffee community in the greater D.C. area”—the Barista Body Calibration workshop will be led by Pilates and Occupational movement specialist Marica Polas and “will explore and demonstrate basic tools to recover quickly post-shift and prevent damage from the repetitive motions inherent in our work as baristas.” Polas will also teach “optimal ways to stand, tamp, pour, and grind coffee with intentionality behind your movements.”

The Barista Body Calibration takes place Friday, September 22nd at Cotton & Reed between 2:00pm and 4:00pm local time. Tickets for the event cost $25 in advance and $30 at the door. To guarantee your spot, pre-register and buy your ticket online via the Barista Body Calibration Eventbrite page. Sprudge is proud to be a sponsor of the event to help you get your body right.

For once, you have the chance to not completely wreck yourself over competition weekend.
